Approaching Completion…
This will be the first of many new blog posts introducing flutes that are in the “UNDER CONTRUCTION” process and are fast approaching the finish line. It is important to note that any flutes that are being made in our shop that are not a commissioned piece are available as you see them once complete, or you may add some of you own changes if possible to make them more of your own.
This flute is a larger flute by design and features some really nice simplistic, yet elegant visuals. Crafted from a solid billet of Old Growth Alaskan Yellow Cedar, this 1 1/8″ bore flute has a deeper voice tuned to the Key of D @440Hz. Crafted as a 6 hole flute with the 4 Winds Tuning Holes. The totem and totem rails were crafted from very old river reclaimed Sapodilla, as is the actual totem itself, a whimsical eagles head. What you see in these pictures are how the flute looks right now prior to final finishing with current plans for the body to be completed in a Satin lacquer. Having said that there is still time to have the finish be completed in a high gloss finish for a more vibrant affect. The foot of the flute will have a wrap with cut fringe made from hand cut elk hide adding a nice finishing touch.
As with many of our spec flutes we try to provide opportunities to make subtle changes such as adding inlaid, hand made cabochons set in Sterling Silver. We can craft your cabochon using many materials such as stone, wood, antler all hand cut and shaped Catlinite (Pipestone) beads, leather accents and more. Adding a cabochon will change the price point if not already included in the build.
This flute ships with the stands similar to what you see in these images. The base of the stands will be finished in either black or red felt cloth for added protection when displayed. They also are available in acrylic black, red or orange. We offer optional stands similar in design but they are made so you mount your flute on any wall rather than flat surface at an additional cost. During the production of this flute an error was made in the placement of the #2 finger hole and if you look closely the #2 hole is slightly off center. This does not affect the playing or voice of this flute. It only affects a the aesthetic when looking directly above the flute. If it was not pointed out most people would never notice it. But we do. Aside from this small mishap this will be a very nice flute with a beautiful voice.
When choosing a flute with a larger bore you must consider that there is an added degree of difficulty in playing these larger bodied flutes. It is the very nature of the larger bore however that give the the deeper sounding tone, pleasant to the ear. The current price point for this flute as you see it now finished is $850.00. If you choose to add a sterling silver set cabochon then this will add to the price of the finished product. Right now that choice is yours.
